Expectations for the Clinic

We Only Focus on Headache-Related Concerns

  • Our division is specifically focused on and trained to treat headaches.

    • We treat people with conditions such as: migraine, sports concussion, cluster headache, trigeminal autonomic cephalgia, new daily persistent headache and other rare primary headache syndromes and secondary headaches such as cervicogenic headache and post-traumatic headache.

  • If you have additional neurologic problems, we recommend discussing these with your primary care or referring provider.

We Do Not Prescribe Opioids at the Headache Clinic

  • To provide our patients with quality care, we don't prescribe opioid pain medication.

  • Opioid medications aren't recommended for managing headaches. Did you know that opioid medications can actually make your headaches worse?

  • Instead, we have a wide list of over-the-counter and prescription medications that, when used at the recommendation of a provider, can help our patients manage their chronic headache pain.

  • If you're currently using opioids for headache, coming off of opioids will be a part of your headache treatment plan. This should be discussed with your prescribing provider prior to your appointment. Learn more.

The Headache Clinic Doesn't File for Disability

  • The Headache Clinic at Ohio State doesn't fill out disability paperwork.

  • It's important to try to attend work and/or school even with a headache. Missing work and school doesn't help improve headaches.

  •  All questions about long- or short-term disability paperwork should be directed to your primary care provider or referring neurologist. Learn more.

Follow-Up Appointments for Headache

  • After you see your headache specialist, you may receive follow-up care in the following ways:

    • You may have a follow-up appointment with one of our headache specialists. This may or may not be the same provider you saw on your first visit.

    • You may have a follow-up appointment with your referring provider. We'll share a full report, including care recommendations, with you and your referring provider.

About Headache.Help

The website is under development to provide resources for patients and physicians. Patients can access a variety of resources to help manage and treat headache symptoms. Physicians can access an algorithm to help diagnose common types of headache based on a patient’s symptoms. We created this website with headache specialty neurologists and primary care physicians to inform people about headaches and headache management.
